Description: There are more than 600 species of eucalyptus, of which about 20 are harvested for their essential oils. They are tall evergreen tress with long, narrow leaves and white-yellow flowers. Those listed above are the main species used in aromatherapy. The essential oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and twigs.
Countries of origin: Australia, China, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Russia, America
Characteristics: Eucalyptus has fresh, sharp, camphoraceous top notes and penetrating, woody undertones. It blends well with most other woods and herbs, and also with lavender and lemon.
Main therapeutic properties: Analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-neuralgic, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, anti-viral, astringent, decongestant, deodorant, diuretic, expectorant, febrifuge.
Eucalyptus is probably the most familiar essential oil, used as a decongestant in steam inhalations to relieve colds, flu and other respiratory ailments. It clears the head wonderfully and relieves headaches and neuralgia. Eucalyptus is an excellent insect repellent and is also good at treating bites and stings. Overall, it is stimulating, refreshing and clearing.
Used in the bath or in a local wash, Eucalyptus radiata is reputed to relieve the pain of shingles, and when blended with bergamot it is effective against cold sores and herpes.
Psychologically, eucalyptus is piercing, stimulating and purifying. It is useful in meditations when you have a cold, to keep the mind clear.
It is a tonic of the subtle energy, especially of the lungs, and helps those who feel constricted in their lives. Eucalyptus also makes a good psychic cleaner in a burner, to cleanse rooms of negative energy.
