(Syzygium aromaticum, Eugenia aromatica, Eugenia caryophyllata)
Family: Myrtaceae
Description: Clove is a long-lived evergreen tree with glossy green leaves and rosy-pink buds, which become fragrant red flowers and purple fruits. The essential oil is water-distilled from the flower buds.
Countries of origin: Zanzibar, Madagascar, Indonesia
Characteristics: Clove bud has fresh, fruity top notes and deep, sweet, spicy undertones. In tiny amounts, it blends well with most citruses and florals, and also with clary sage, bay, lemongrass and sandalwood. Clove was a traditional ingredient of ancient Egyptian fragrances and adds an interesting, mysterious, oriental dimension to mood perfumes.
Main therapeutic properties: Analgesic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic carminative, stimulant, stomachic. Clove bud is the first choice as first aid for toothache. A couple of drops of clove essential oil on a cotton wool bud, applied to the aching tooth, has a slight anaesthetic affect, relieving pain for a few hours. If the pain is caused by a lost filling, a piece of cotton wool soaked in clove oil and inserted into the cavity will have the same analgesic, anaesthetic Clove bud (Syzygium aromaticum) effect. Its strong antiseptic properties make clove good at preventing colds and influenza. Overall, clove is pain-relieving, comforting and revitalizing.
Small amounts of clove blended into massage oils can help to relieve stiff, aching muscles and rheumatic joint pain. If you feel ‘chilled to the bone’, adding a couple of drops of clove to a bath oil blend is warming and comforting. Small amounts of clove can often enhance the fragrance of a mood perfume, massage blend or bath oil. Clove also helps to relieve flatulence, stimulate digestion and restore appetite.
Psychologically, clove is a mental, emotional and subtle energy tonic, and is both restorative and stimulating.
Contraindications: Do not use if you have sensitive or very sensitive skin. Use no more than 2 drops in the bath and no more than 1 per cent in massage oils.
