Family: Apiaceae or Umbelliferae Description: Coriander is a fragrant annual herb with delicate white flowers turning into masses of round seeds. The essential oil is steam-distilled from the crushed ripe seeds.
Countries of origin: Russia, Romania, France, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia
Characteristics: Coriander has fresh, sweet, spicy top notes and woody, musky undertones. It blends well with the other spices and most citruses, and also with frankincense, sandalwood, clary sage, jasmine, neroli, petitgrain, cypress, pine and melissa.
Main therapeutic properties: Analgesic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, bactericide, carminative, depurative, digestive, stimulant, stomachic.
Coriander is one of the more gentle spice essential oils and is a good digestive tonic, helping to relieve nausea and flatulence. It also restores and stimulates the appetite, and may be useful in treating anorexia nervosa. It lifts the spirits and is good for nervous exhaustion and general debility. Overall, coriander is revitalizing, refreshing and comforting.
Psychologically, coriander is reviving and good for stimulating low energy. It is both relaxing and stimulating – a combination of properties that inspires creativity. It adds a pleasant and interesting note to massage blends and mood perfumes, and is good for relieving stress and irritability. Coriander is also beneficial during convalescence.
